In northern California, the Sonoma Biochar Initiative has been active in many biochar-related activities since 2009, including the 2012 USBI Conference at Sonoma State University, a Citizen Science Experiment, a series of Conservation Burn trainings and workshops, and a USDA Conservation Innovation grant project that produced biochar with an Adam-Retort and used it for field trials at three local farms. Now SBI is gearing up to manage a Department of Water Resources grant to test biochar’s ability to save farmer’s water at a number of farms up and down the state.  For more information, visit their web site here: http://www.sonomabiocharinitiative.org
